Could your mind be hindering conception?

Are you one of many couples having trouble conceiving?

Are you feeling frustrated and a failure because you feel you have lost control, and you just can’t seem to be able to do what you believe you were created for?

Are you finding your relationship is not as it was because your fertility journey has become all-consuming?

Maybe you have already tried different methods of assisted conception but have not yet been successful. Infertility is a highly emotional, unpredictable experience for 1 in 6 couples. Trying to fall pregnancy can quickly move from a fun project to an emotionally intense and overwhelming medical undertaking.

Have you considered that your mind may be hindering your ability to be in “the right place mentally” to fall pregnant?

I spent years trying to conceive and yes it was a very tough time in my relationship. All my gremlins of “not feeling good enough”, my long-standing blood and needle phobia, general jealousy and feelings of being out of control came to the forefront. After falling pregnant and having my daughter, who is now 16, I was so amazed with the power of alternative therapies that I decided to retrain so I could help others on their own fertility journey.

Having been through IUI and IVF procedures myself I can relate to some of the challenges my clients might be having and can help support them.  Most people, even your close family who haven’t been through this, can’t possibly understand the emotional distress you are going through.

What are the benefits of hypnotherapy for fertility?

Hypnotherapy and fertility coaching could:

  • Give you the tools to manage your anxiety, reduce stress, and manage your expectations
  • Help manage your emotions caused by not being able to grow your family when you want, social pressure, feelings of jealousy, isolation, anger or guilt
  • Help you rebuild your self-esteem and take away that feeling of “not being good enough”
  • Support you through any fertility treatments so you remain positive at all stages of treatment from drug stimulation, embryo transfer, through to the dreaded two-week wait
  • Help you banish any unhealthy habits such as smoking, alcohol or food addictions
  • If necessary, help you overcome fear of needles, hospital procedures or perhaps pregnancy, miscarriage, birth and/or parenthood
  • And, most importantly, help you to appreciate the life you do have so it’s doesn’t become all about “Project Baby”

What does a hypnotherapy session look like?

Professional hypnosis is nothing like stage hypnosis – it is safe and not something to be frightened of.  The session will have you feeling like you are in a “dreamlike” state, you will remain aware of what is happening and won’t do or say anything against your will.  You will be able to stop at any time you wish and most people find it a calming experience.

When you are in a relaxing, trance state your brain produces endorphins which helps restore hormone balance, regulate the nervous system and promote a healthy immune system.  By talking to your unconscious mind in this state, using visualisations and suggestions, we can help to change any unhelpful ways of feeling, thinking or behaving.

How do I know it will make a difference?

Obviously there are no guarantees as we all react differently, but research has demonstrated the beneficial effects of mind and body techniques when used alongside IVF.

Alice Domar undertook a study on 100 women starting IVF treatment. She found on a second round of IVF treatment that those who had a series of wellbeing/mind sessions had a significantly higher pregnancy rate. 52% compared to 20% of the control group.  Read more about this here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21496800

Dr Peter Quinn undertook a study with a group of women who had had durations of infertility between 2-12 years.  After a course of hypnotherapy, 65% of the women went on to have a successful full-term pregnancy (Dr. P Quinn and M Pawson (1994), “Psychosomatic Infertility”, European Journal of Clinical Hypnosis, Vol.4).

So, you can see the potential of the mind-body connection and how valuable it could be to help you feel more in control, as well as reducing any stress and anxiety around your fertility journey.
