The number of families created by same-sex couples through donor conception, surrogacy and adoption has grown by more than 50% since 2015 (ONS, 2019).
However, this pathway is not straightforward. Many couples, and indeed an increasing number of single LGBTQ+ individuals, are faced with little NHS support, financial strains, and people often lacking knowledge about the route and approaches to alternative parenting.
Then, there is the issue of terminology. Albeit an evolving discussion, HR departments, line managers and the wider workforce could no doubt benefit from understanding both the language and pronouns that may help their LGBTQ+ employees feel more included in the conversations – and the complex processes they will have to go through, to achieve parenthood.
If employers can feel equipped to better understand the journey, its implications and repercussions, it will make for a happier, more inclusive workplace.
