Building a comprehensive healthcare strategy: Why bolt-ons eventually stop working
A VIP breakfast for HR leaders at scale-ups to discuss building a comprehensive healthcare strategy, the limitations of benefits bolt-ons at a growing company, and what changes when you cross 250 employees.
Speakers

Most scale-ups build their benefits the same way. An employee raises a fertility challenge, so you add a fertility provider. A few employees mention mental health support in an employee feedback survey, so you add a mental health app. Menopause comes up in an engagement survey, so you run a webinar.
This approach often results in six employee wellbeing vendors, six contracts, six logins, an employee base that aren't sure what they're entitled to, and a PMI policy that still doesn't cover the things people are actually asking for. The admin lands on a small HR team.
Scale-up growth is what breaks the bolt-on model. At 250 employees you become subject to gender pay gap reporting, and from spring 2027 you'll also need to publish an equality action plan setting out what you're doing on the pay gap and how you support employees through menopause.
Join our Friends of Fertifa breakfast for HR leaders at tech scale-ups to discuss what a comprehensive healthcare strategy looks like, how to consolidate without losing what works, and how to build something that holds up as you grow. We'll be joined by leading scale-ups sharing their insights.
- When: Wednesday 14th October | 0830 - 1030
- Where: The Ivy Tower Bridge
What we'll cover:
- Why bolt-ons stop working. The point at which a stack of individual providers starts costing more in admin, budget and employee confusion than it delivers in support.
- The healthcare gaps that your PMI doesn't cover. Fertility, menopause, maternity, men's health, neurodiversity and mental health sit largely outside standard PMI. We'll look at what your policy actually covers and compare that with what your employees really need.
- A first look at findings from Fertifa Data Labs. We're surveying employees working in tech scale-ups on the healthcare gaps in their benefits, how they affect productivity and engagement, and whether they are moving to competitors with more comprehensive benefits. Attendees will see the findings before anyone else.
This Friends of Fertifa breakfast is an intimate session for people leaders at growing tech companies. It's a chance to compare notes with peers facing the same challenges and to share best practice.
