If you're using a GLP-1 medication and thinking about starting a family, you might be wondering how these treatments could impact your fertility. This is a very common question and it's completely normal to want to understand more about the science behind these medications and what current research says for both women and men.
In this article, we’ll look at how GLP-1s influence fertility and metabolic health, so you can feel confident and informed about your next steps.
What are GLP-1 medications?
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) medications, like semaglutide (Wegovy or Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro), are commonly prescribed for weight loss and managing blood sugar. They work by mimicking the natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate insulin secretion, reduces appetite, and slows digestion. While these medications are often effective in managing these conditions, their impact on fertility is an area that’s still being researched.
How GLP-1s support ovulation
Regular ovulation is a key factor in conception. For many people, this process can be disrupted by metabolic issues like high insulin levels or carrying excess weight. You can think of GLP-1 medications as helping to “reset” your body’s internal balance.
By helping you reach a healthier weight and improving how your body processes sugar, these medications reduce the hormonal “noise” that can sometimes interfere with the signals your brain sends to your ovaries. While the medication itself isn’t a fertility treatment, it helps create a more stable physiological environment where regular ovulation is more likely to occur naturally.
The role of GLP-1s in PCOS
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common causes of fertility challenges, often driven by insulin resistance and hormonal imbalance. GLP-1 medications can be particularly helpful here because they tackle two of the main barriers to conceiving with PCOS.
Lowering insulin
High levels of insulin (common in PCOS) tell your ovaries to produce too much testosterone. This extra testosterone usually stops an egg from being released. By helping your body respond better to insulin, these medications help lower these levels, allowing your reproductive hormones to return to a natural balance.
Weight management
Carrying excess weight can store and produce hormones that disrupt the menstrual cycle. By supporting weight loss, GLP-1s make it much easier for your menstrual cycle to regulate and for ovulation to occur.
If you have PCOS and are trying to conceive, GLP-1 medications might be a helpful part of your treatment plan. It’s always recommended to work closely with your doctor or Fertifa Clinical Advisor to develop a personalised approach.

Male fertility and GLP-1s
At Fertifa, we always stress that fertility is a team effort and it’s important to consider how GLP-1s affect those assigned male at birth. While direct research is still evolving, the indirect benefits are promising.
Excess body fat can lead to increased oestrogen and decreased testosterone. By supporting weight loss and improving metabolic health, GLP-1s can naturally boost testosterone levels and improve sperm quality, including count and motility (how well sperm move). A healthier metabolic profile generally leads to better reproductive outcomes for both partners.
While GLP-1 medications are not specifically designed to improve male fertility, it’s always best to consult your doctor or Fertifa Clinical Advisor to discuss the best plan for you if you’re trying to conceive while on GLP-1 treatment.
Thinking about conceiving and GLP-1s
While GLP-1s can help prepare the body for pregnancy, they are not proven to be safe while actually pregnant or trying to conceive. At Fertifa we recommend waiting 3 months after stopping your GLP-1 medication before you start trying to conceive. This window is vital to ensure the medication has completely left your system and to give your body and hormones time to settle.
During this 3-month period, it’s important to work closely with your doctor or Fertifa Clinical Advisor. They can monitor your progress, help manage any health concerns, and offer advice on transitioning from GLP-1 medication to other forms of support for weight management or blood sugar control.
If you are planning to move from GLP-1 treatment toward trying for a baby, we recommend the following steps:
1. Speak with your Fertifa Clinical Advisor: They can help you transition safely and ensure your health remains managed through pregnancy-safe alternatives
2. Focus on preconception health: Use the 3-month period to focus on prenatal vitamins (like Folic Acid and Vitamin D) and lifestyle habits to support a healthy pregnancy
3. Monitor your cycle: As you come off the medication, keep track of your periods. If your cycles become irregular, your clinical team can provide further support.
If you are a Fertifa patient, you can reach out to your dedicated Clinical Advisor via the Fertifa app.
Your path to parenthood is unique and navigating changes to your medication is a significant part of that journey.
