What is meant by neurodiversity?

There's often uncertainty surrounding the many terms relating to neurodiversity - here's a brief glossary for some of the most commonly used:

  • Neurodiversity: The concept that differences in brain function and behavioural traits are a normal and are a natural variation within the human population.
  • Neurodivergent (ND): An individual whose brain functions in ways that diverge significantly from the dominant societal standards; "typical."
  • Neurotypical (NT): An individual whose brain functions within the range considered typical for their age and culture.
  • Neurodivergence: The state of having a brain that functions differently from the "typical" brain.
  • Neuroinclusion: rRefers to the practice of actively including and accommodating individuals with diverse neurotypes, including both neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals, in all aspects of society.

In this article, we'll look at the proven benefits of neuroinclusive workplace practices and evaluate the leading providers currently supporting employees in the UK.

The benefits of neuroinclusion

Time and time again, studies have shown that companies who that hire neurodivergent employees and invest in their support and development see business benefits and enhanced employee productivity.

These statistics, taken from a variety of recent studies, highlight the positive impacts of investing in neurodiversity support on all areas of business:

- An estimated 15% to 20% of the UK population is considered neurodivergent (approximately 1 in 7 people).

- Cognitively diverse teams of executives were found in one study to solve simulated problem sets up to three times faster than homogenous teams.

Increased productivity and reduced errors

- Companies running neurodiversity programmes such as Hewlett-Packard and Deloitte have reported a 30% increase in productivity among teams that integrated neurodivergent employees.

- Research by JPMorgan Chase found that professionals in their Autism at Work initiative made fewer errors and were 90% to 140% more productive than neurotypical employees in certain roles.

Enhanced retention

- Companies with neuroinclusive hiring programmes, such as SAP and Microsoft have reported retention rates of more than 90% for these employees.

- Replacing a single employee in the UK can cost a business between 30% and 200% of their annual salary. High turnover due to non-inclusive environments is a costly and avoidable expense.

Are adjustments expensive to make?

UK data suggests that most necessary workplace adjustments cost less than £500, and nearly half cost literally nothing to implement.

iHasco offers neurodiversity awareness training to provide employees and managers with the knowledge to create an inclusive workplace.

The course covers three main areas to promote workplace support:

- Understanding neurodiversity: Defining neurodiversity (e.g., autism, ADHD, dyslexia), addressing misconceptions, and highlighting the unique strengths and challenges neurodivergent individuals bring to work

- Legal advice and best practice: Explaining an employer's responsibilities under the law (such as the Equality Act) and emphasising the strength-based support models

- Practical Support: Giving employees and managers tools to make reasonable adjustments and foster a culture of psychological safety, ensuring support is tailored to an individual's needs

Genius Within

Genius Within is a neurodivergent-led social enterprise whose workplace support is rooted in occupational psychology and aims to foster inclusion by maximising people's strengths and supporting their challenges.

Genius Within's approach to neurodiversity support is holistic and person-centred, focusing on three main pillars:

- Strengths-Based Focus: They emphasise the unique cognitive strengths of neurodivergent individuals (e.g., creativity, visual thinking, attention to detail) rather than  deficits, aiming to match these "spiky profiles" to the right roles and tasks

- Individualised Support: They offer in-depth Workplace Needs Assessments and Strategy Coaching (often resulting in a 61% performance increase on average). The goal is to co-create personalised, long-term coping strategies and identify the most effective reasonable adjustments (environmental, technological, or procedural)

- Systemic Change for Employers: They provide comprehensive Neurodiversity Awareness Training for staff and managers, and Consultancy Services to help organisations embed neuroinclusive practices across the entire employee lifecycle, from recruitment to performance management

- Specialised Recruitment Services to connect employers with neurodivergent talent

Neurodiversity support through Fertifa

Check in with your HR team to see what kind of neurodiversity support or benefits you may be entitled to. For those who have access to our neurodiversity services with Fertifa, support is available through our dedicated clinical network. In partnership with organisations such as Melios, Sloane Court Clinic, Neurobox, Psicon and Lexxic, we provide personalised care for a wide range of neurodiverse conditions, including ADHD, dyslexia, autism, obsessive compulsive disorder and more.

Our clinical partners can carry out diagnostic assessments where appropriate, and refer individuals back to us for ongoing support. This may include medication, therapy, coaching, specialist software and equipment, coloured lenses and other tailored tools to help manage symptoms more effectively.

We also offer workplace needs assessments. These are available whether or not someone has a formal diagnosis, and are designed to identify simple, practical adjustments that can make day-to-day work more accessible and sustainable.

Simple adjustments for neurodivergent employees can make a significant difference. When people with ADHD feel understood and supported, they are far more likely to thrive, contribute fully and feel confident in their role. If you want to learn more about how you can support your employees with ADHD and what neurodiversity support is available as a Fertifa patient, book a call with us today.
